Just as in people, wheat gluten issues and coeliac disease would seem to be becoming increasingly prevalent in dogs and can be very, very unpleasant for our dogs to live with.

Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome (Facebook)

A fabulous group promoting many research projects, the Canine epileptoid cramping syndrome group is run by Mee Brotfox, who will personally message every new member offering support for those who have come across the group looking for answers to their own dog’s health problems.

CECS is a disease (also known as Spike’s disease) is most commonly recognised in border terriers and until recently was mistaken for a form of epilepsy, however there are manyother breeds now recognised as being affected. Research is much ongoing, but there is now a well established connection with wheat gluten.

While there are many aspects of the symptoms that may have been not quite as my Escher would suffer, this would seem to be the nearest known condition offering the most similar symptoms, not lease in the very apparent stomach cramping, pain and stomach issues that he would suffer if he managed to ingest anything containing wheat gluten.

It also seemed to be that the preventative treatment to hopefully stave off attacks were very effective in helping us avoid and prevent him becoming ill.
